WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA9) --- A T-Ball Set, soccer ball and books. Over 200 children got new toys in Ward 8 tonight.

DC Councilmember Marion Barry hosted a Holiday Toy Giveaway
at Fort Stanton Recreation Center in Southeast.

"The need is so great out here," said Barry who represents Ward 8.  He greeted families wearing a festive Santa hat. He estimated about 600 toys were given away.

The toys put "many smiles" on children's faces, when parents are struggling financially during the holiday season.

"I'm happy on one hand. I'm sad to see, that we have people, who don't have a toy, wouldn't have a toy if it weren't for this toy drive," Barry said.

Many Ward 8 volunteers and groups made the toy drive possible:

-Toys for Tots, U.S. Marines
-Major Chuck Kilbride, U.S. Marines
-Sergeant Carlos Tong, U.S. Marines
-Joint Base Anacostia - Bolling Air Force Base
-Christina Cox, Executive Director,
The National Museum of Catholic Art and Library.
