"The Best Sandwich I've Ever Ate": Capitol Hill

The other night I was watching Food Network's "The Best Thing I Ever Ate", a show that features Food TV personalities and celebrity chefs sharing their favorite dishes from across the country.

I began thinking to myself what I would say if there was a similar show specifically dedicated to dishes in D.C..

So here is the first installment of "The Best Thing I Ever Ate: D.C.", and we'll start with even more specific parameters: "The Best Sandwich I Ever Ate: Capitol Hill".

There are a number of great lunchy/sandwichy places in the Capitol Hill community, but every time I'm in the area I have to have the Market Lunch's North Carolina Barbecue pork sandwich.

The Market Lunch, which is located in the Eastern Market indoor building, isn't the only outlet in the space to serve a barbecue pork sandwich.  Canales Deli does as well and the sandwich there is good.  Market Lunch's sandwich, though, is on another level.

The beauty of the Market Lunch barbecue sandwich lies in its simplicity: a giant scoop of North Carolina style chopped/pulled pork on a round roll with cole slaw.  It doesn't play games, and there are no surprises.  And that's what I love about it.

If you're looking for a sandwich that features fancy aiolis, artisan bread, or a variety of toppings, this is not for you.

The barbecue sauce comes on the side if asked for, the bun is very standard, and cole slaw is where the toppings end.

But it's so good.  And make sure you order fries on the side as well, because they're made the way fries should be made.

Warnings/Disclaimers:

  • I'm a barbecue fiend.  I order it everywhere and it's probably my favorite type of food.
  • The bun of the sandwich will inevitably fall apart because it can't sustain the amount of meat, so you'll get a little dirty, but don't be afraid.
  • The line at Market Lunch is pretty insane on weekends, so if you can venture over on a weekday instead, you should.
  • They do not take credit or debit cards at the Market Lunch, so come with cash in hand.
  • The staff might be slightly intimidating to some customers as they belt out orders and become increasingly louder if you don't hear them the first time, but they do it for everyone, so don't take it personally.
  • You will feel sufficiently gross after eating this meal of sheer gluttony, but it's worth it.

The Market Lunch is open from 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. from Tuesday-Friday, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays, and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sundays.  They have a number of great items on their menu, but for me, the Carolina Barbecue is "The Best Sandwich I've Ever Ate" in the Capitol Hill neighborhood.
