Bangladesh Toll 547; Search Becomes More Gruesome

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) - Ten days after the horrifying collapse of a garment-factory building, life has become still more gruesome for crews working to recover bodies at the site. The death toll rose to 547 on Saturday and the stench of decaying flesh was sickening evidence that the work is not yet done.

Rescue workers said some bodies have deteriorated so badly that they have found bones without flesh. Since the April 24 collapse in the Dhaka suburb of Savar, high temperatures have generally been 32 degrees C (90 degrees F) or above, and lows have rarely dipped below 27 C (80 F).

"The bodies are smelling. We are using air freshener to work here," said Mohibul Alam, a firefighter at the collapse scene. The odor of decay is overpowering just the same.

Bodies have decomposed beyond recognition, Alam said, but he added that some could still be identified because the victims' identification cards were found with them.

Debate Over Morning-After Pill for 15-year-olds

NEW YORK (AP) – Allison Guarino understands the controversy over new rules allowing 15-year-olds to buy the morning-after pill without a prescription. But as someone who teaches pregnancy prevention to ninth-graders in Boston, she thinks lowering the age will "help the girls who need the help the most."

"Some girls might not have a good relationship with their parents," she said, "or they had unprotected sex and they don't know what to do."

On the other side of the issue are folks like Brenda Velasco Ross, who says the new rules infringe on her rights as a parent.

Israel officials: Strike on Syria targeted weapons

WASHINGTON (AP) - An Israeli airstrike against Syria was targeting a shipment of advanced missiles believed to be bound for the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, Israeli officials confirmed Saturday.

It was the second Israeli strike this year against Syria and the latest salvo in its long-running effort to disrupt Hezbollah's quest to build an arsenal capable of defending against Israel's air force and spreading destruction inside the Jewish state.

The strike comes as the U.S. considers how to respond to indications that the Syrian regime may have used chemical weapons in its bloody civil war. President Barack Obama has described the use of such weapons as a "red line," and the administration is weighing its options - including possible military action.

Obama doesn't foresee U.S. boots on the ground in Syria

(USA TODAY) -- President Obama said on Friday he does not foresee a situation in which deploying U.S. troops to Syria would be helpful.

"As a general rule, I don't rule things out as commander-in-chief, because circumstances change," Obama told reporters during his visit to Costa Rica on Friday. "Having said that I do not foresee a scenario in which boots on the ground in Syria - American boots on the ground in Syria - would be good for America but would also be good for Syria."

Obama's comments come a little more than a week after the White House said it is very likely that Syrian President Bashar Assad had used chemical weapons against his people. The president had previously set use or transfer of chemical weapons by Assad as a "red line" that would elicit an unspecified response from the Obama administration.

Obama, however, has cautioned that more proof is needed before the United States escalates its involvement in Syria.

There are changes to this year's Independence Day celebration that you will notice: cutbacks due to sequestration.

The concert that the National Park Service puts on near the Washington Monument costs about $240,000.  It's getting the axe.

The fireworks cost about $260,000, but escaped the budget axe.
